China: Educate Women in China
Project Update
Educate Women in China estimates that roughly 700 million people in the country lack access to health care and sanitation; and though the government does address some issues (like HIV and AIDS) in an "oblique" way, health resources are generally hard to find, expensive to buy and heavily censored. Print information, in particular, is costly to produce and beyond the reach of the majority.
Our partner is translating excerpts from Our Bodies, Ourselves on topics such as sexually and non-sexually transmitted infections, breast cancer, contraception and violence, and developing their materials in print and digital format for cellular phones and the Internet. Other topics will be translated (and adapted) depending on public and political reaction to their resources.
The ultimate goal is to reach 1.5 million women and girls, using strategies that make information easy to disseminate and digest. For example: content sent via text messages is framed as "health tips of the day" or presented in a question-and-answer format, with animation, to appeal to young women. Our partner is optimistic about digital outreach as almost everyone in the country has a text-capable mobile phone.
Online, a tracker keeps count of users accessing information on the organization's website; and a team of middle school girls is helping design and moderate a blog - a focal point of dissemination to young people.

The organization increases access to resources that can improve the lives of women and girls on a practical day-to-day basis and implements programs that focus on health, safety, food and agriculture, Internet use and literacy.
