India: Women Unlimited (English)
Project UpdateIn 2008, Women Unlimited published an English reprint of Our Bodies, Ourselves for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives.
This resource retains the basic structure and content of the original book, but contains updated and contextual information relevant to the lives of women and girls in the South Asia region. Specific sections such as birth control, contraceptive technology, substance abuse, violence, sexuality and sexually transmitted infections are amended to introduce ideas into public discourse on women's health. Each chapter also includes a list of local resources.
Given that women comprise the largest segment of health workers, health consumers and health decision-makers for their families and communities – but under-represented in positions of influence and policy – our partner hopes that readers will become well-informed health consumers and catalysts for social change.

Meet Our Partner
In 1984, in a Delhi garage, Ritu Menon and Urvashi Butalia came together to create a publishing mouthpiece for Indian feminism. Their publishing house, Kali for Women, went on to produce an interesting mix of theory and practice - activist publications that may not have made much money, but certainly redefined issues of women's lives in positive ways.
In 2003, Kali for Women, arguably the first Indian publishing house dedicated to publishing on and for women, split into two independent imprints - Zubaan and Women Unlimited. Both continue to build on Kali's eclectic history, offering the best of feminist scholarship, activism and creative writing at affordable prices.
By its very nature, a feminist publisher is part of the women’s movement, creating spaces for individual and collective action.
Women Unlimited is no exception.
The organization firmly believes in partnership between theory and practice - that the insights of each fuels the work of the other. They boast an impressive publishing roster of pioneering feminist scholars and activists, including: Bina Agarwal, Paola Bacchetta, Kamla Bhasin, Radhika Chopra, Radhika Coomaraswamy, Neloufer de Mel, Zillah Eisenstein, Rada Ivekovic, Indira Jaising, Kumari Jayawardena, Kalpana Kannabiran, Nighat Said Khan, Fatima Mernissi, Chandra Mohanty, Martha Nussbaum, Rajeswari Sunder Rajan, Shahnaz Rouse, Vandana Shiva and Romila Thapar; as well as some of the finest creative writers – Bama, Ismat Chughtai, Esther David, Mridula Garg, Qurratulain Hyder and Nayantara Sahgal.
They also collaborate with organizations across the region to increase the body of knowledge on women in the developing world and provide a forum for women writers. Their partners include: Women’s WORLD; Women In Security, Conflict Management and Peace; Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia; International Centre for Ethnic Studies; Lawyers’ Collective; Asmita; Jagori; and Women’s Feature Service.
