Project Update
The Groupe de Recherche sur les Femmes et les Lois au Senegal or GREFELS published Notre Corps, Notre Sante in 2004.
In their preface, our partner says the main objective of the book is to bring African women knowledge that will enable them to appropriate their body, take care of it and like it. Hence, an important part of this resource is representations men and women have about women's bodies, health and sexuality, about the way women's bodies are used, taken care of, dressed and/or violated.
The book, developed for French speaking Africa and currently in circulation, has reached audiences in 21 countries, including women and girls in the community, journalists and GREFELS research network and institutional partners. The OBOS Global Initiative continues to help with distribution, specifically to individuals and groups working with immigrant communities in the U.S.

Meet Our Partner
Groupe de Recherche sur les Femmes et let Lois au Senegal or GREFELS was founded in 1996 by a group of women involved in an international solidarity network, Women Living Under Muslim Laws. This network provides information, support and a collective space for women whose lives are shaped, conditioned or governed by Islamic laws and customs. It covers 70 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
GREFELS is a feminist, apolitical and non-sectarian organization that conducts research and advocates on women's rights. Examples include: Women of the World: Laws and Policies Affecting their Reproductive Lives, Francophone Africa (1998) - published in partnership with the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy in New York; and Women’s Reproductive Rights in Senegal: Implementation, Enforcement, and the Reality of Women’s Reproductive Lives (2000) - a shadow report presented to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at its 26th session as a supplement to the periodic report of the Government of Senegal.
As a member of the WLUML network, GREFELS serves as the coordinating office for Africa and the Middle East and, in this capacity, it is responsible for activities and tasks related to networking, disseminating information, and promoting action. It also operates the Senegal Feminist Forum, which, among other things, unites Senegalese feminists (most of whom work alone or in small groups) to take collective action against patriarchy and conservatism of all types.
