United States: Spanish Translation and Adaptation

NCNV-cover

Project Update

Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas is the first Spanish cultural adaptation of Our Bodies, Ourselves for Latina women. Published in 1977, it is currently in its second edition, which was released in 2000.

Like Our Bodies, Ourselves, this resource honors the personal stories of women. Its content and organization, however, acknowledge that Latina perspectives on health and sexuality differ from those expressed in the English book. It recognizes that issues of cultural identity, politics, and living life between Latin American and US worlds informs the health of Latina women. (Read the table of contents.)

OBOS and its collaborating partners hope the publication of Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas and the dissemination of Latina-directed health information will provide a milestone opportunity for outreach, prevention awareness, and network-building in Spanish-speaking communities locally, nationally and internationally.

Read a comparison between Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas and Our Bodies, Ourselves. Also, check out our Promotoras de Salud training guide, based on Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas for community lay health workers.

Meet Our Partners

The coordination and structure of this project is unlike other OBOS Global Initiative collaborations.

Recognizing how essential it was for the Spanish adaptation, Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas, to reflect the plurality of cultures, politics and economics characteristic of Latinas throughout the Americas, OBOS initiated a massive collaboration with 19 women's health groups from 11 countries in Central, North and South America, and the Caribbean. The resource is the fruit of four years of collaborative effort, during which all the participating groups critiqued and revised each chapter of the book. So, while OBOS may have been an instigator, this edition would not have seen the light of day without the energy, creativity, commitment and expertise of our collaborating partners and publisher, Seven Stories Press.

We thank them all.
