National Health Care: Interview with Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton

In the fall of 2007, Our Bodies Ourselves interviewed Senator Hillary Clinton and members of her presidential campaign to determine how well Clinton's health care plan addresses the concerns of women and to raise awareness about the specific health issues women face.  We've posted transcripts and audio files of the interviews below.

For the first interview, OBOS submitted questions ranging from the lack of comprehensive health insurance for low-paid workers to the need for insurers to cover a range of mental health services. Read Clinton's responses here.

A follow-up phone interview with Laurie Rubiner, Clinton's legislative director, covers more specific policy issues. Rubiner answered questions from Judy Norsigian, OBOS executive director, and women's health activists representing the National Women's Health Network, Childbirth Connection and the Black Women's Health Imperative.

The interview addressed, among other topics, the need for evidence-based maternity care, the negative impact of direct-to-consumer advertising, and the importance of universal, affordable insurance.

You can read the complete transcript here.

More information about all of the presidential candidates' positions on health care issues is available at Health08.org, a campaign website created by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The site allows users to create a side-by-side comparison of the candidates' specific health care proposals.

OBOS is in the process of putting together a larger section on the presidential candidates and their positions on health care and women's health issues. Clinton's campaign was the first to reach out to OBOS to address specific questions, and we hope the other candidates will respond to questions as well.
